Vatnsnes peninsula offers various seal watching location where you can observe harbour seals/common seals in their natural habitat. The main locations are Svalbarð (west coast), Illugastaðir (west coast) and Ósar (east coast). Hindisvík Creek, has now been closed to out outside traffic.
Attention please! Seals usually rest a shore during low tide, but feed during high tide. It is also less likely to see seals in strong winds and rain. For more information about daily seal watching conditions at Vatnsnes peninsula, please contact The Icelandic Seal Center's reception.
Please keep in mind that wild animals, such as seals and birds, can be vulnerable to human presence, to minimize the disturbance please notice the following:
- To enjoy your visit to the seal colony to the fullest, it is necessary to bring good binoculars. Please do not go closer to the animals then 100 m. If the animals change their behaviour, become anxious or try to get away/flush, please do not come closer.
- To get good photos of wild animals it is necessary to have cameras with good zoom lens. It is not very likely to get good photos of seals and birds with normal camera lenses.
- Please walk slowly and quietly through the habitats of wild animals. Avoid shouting, calling, running and any sudden movements.
- Although seals are very beautiful, they can also be dangerous if threatened. Please do not touch sick or injured animals, but notify The Icelandic Seal Center.
- Please do not touch seal pups that have wandered of from their mothers. It can be dangerous to come between a pup and its mother.
- Please do not touch chicks or sick/injured birds, but notify The Icelandic Seal Center.
- Please allow the animals to observe you in their own time. A curious seal can swim quite close if it is not threatened in any way. Being considerate is always worth it.
Thank you!
