Welcome to the Icelandic Seal Center!
The Icelandic Seal Center was founded in 2005 to provide a center for pinniped (seal) research in Iceland and to provide and promote sustainable tourism in the area as well as to promote and educate the general public about this most graceful of sea creatures.
The Center is located in the small fishing village of Hvammstangi in the north west of Iceland, just 6km from the main Route 1 that circles the country and is exactly midway between Reykjavík and Akureyri.
The town itself is on the Vatnsnes Peninsula, home to some of Europe’s largest and most accessible seal colonies, and is Iceland premier seal watching location.
The center provides exhibitions and education on the many seal species found in Iceland, as well as the historical importance and utilization of seals in Icelandic culture and tradition.
The large and varied birdlife that can be observed on the Vatnsnes peninsula is also explained as part of the complex environment that exists between the seals and their surroundings.
